BCU canoe & Kayaking Courses

Assuring you of the highest professional service at all times. Paul Howells the proprietor of the centre has been canoeing and kayaking on the river Wye since 1973 and holds the British Canoe Unions Highest Achievable coaching award, Level 5 Coach in Kayaking and Level 4 Coach in Canoeing.
Paul has also been a team member in many top kayaking expeditions to the Nepalese Himalayas, Indian Himalayas, Chilean Andes and other adventurous areas of the world.

BCU 1,2,3,4 and 5 star Training and Assessments.

Before considering specific star awards, its best to just simply learn the skills required for the particular star test etc ,learn to be confident with time and experience and then breeze an assessment!

Some of the courses listed below will help.

All the courses below include accommodation and food, briefing rooms, video review, insurance and experienced/qualified staff.

Accommodation at the standard rates is provided either in our riverside Hotel or Bunk House, depending on availability. Cheaper accommodation on our river side campsite can be accommodated self catering etc

For other courses you may require, or time frames to suite you, please enquire through the booking office. We are totally flexible to your needs.

Intro To Kayaking and Fun


A weekend designed to give you an enjoyable introduction to kayaking. You'll cover everything from what clothing and equipment to choose right up to basic rescue skills, not to mention plenty of paddling. By the end of the weekend you'll have all of the foundation skills to confidently progress in your new sport.

A five day course which will give you a thorough footing in kayaking. You will be introduced to all the equipment and basic skills . On this course there is ample opportunity for coaching and progression in white water.

Introduction to Kayaking for Families

A five day course which will give you a thorough grounding in kayaking. You will be introduced to all the equipment and basic skills on local rivers, lakes and sea. On this course there is ample opportunity for coaching and progression in white water . Tailored specifically for families.

 5 days£410 (£370 for each child aged 8 or above with an adult)

 White Water Sea & Surf

Kayak coaching in North WalesYou've decided you like kayaking. Now it's time to experience racing down the face of a surf wave, bouncing down a rapid and running a tide race. These five days of white water fun will give you an introduction to all the techniques you need to handle a boat in the exciting wild water . You'll also be introduced to Eskimo rolling

Discover White Water Kayaking

Kayak coaching in North WalesA weekend designed to introduce you to the thrills and spills of white water. You'll cover everything from clothing and equipment to foundation white water skills. By the end of the course you will have tackled your first white water and have the confidence to tackle the rapids under your own steam.

Previous Experience Confident flat water paddler with the ability to maneuver your craft, able to perform a confident and controlled capsize.

Introduction to White Water Kayaking

Kayak coaching in North WalesA week for kayakers who have decided to get into white water or for white water paddlers looking to build confidence and control by refining their white water technique. Our aim is to refine your existing paddling skills and coach you in more advanced techniques like breaking in and out, ferry gliding, surfing standing waves and small stoppers. River reading, rescue and rolling will be an integral part of the course. A week of grade II and easy grade III water.

Previous Experience  Confident flat water paddler with the ability to maneuver your craft with ease, able to perform a confident and controlled capsize.

Intermediate White Water Kayak

A five day course on grade II and III white water designed for kayakers who have some white water experience but lack the confidence to move on to the intermediate course. Whether you have limited experience on moving water, you've had a knock in confidence due to a 'big swim', or you've simply been 'out of your boat' for a few years, this course is an ideal confidence booster. Initially you'll spend time consolidating your existing paddling skills before developing your balance and moving on to more advanced techniques. You will also enjoy a more in-depth Knowledge into river reading, rescue and further develop your roll. The course should help you become more comfortable and relaxed on the water so you'll enjoy your paddling more than you ever thought possible.

Previous Experience  Some white water experience, able to perform a flat water roll.

 Intermediate White Water Kayaking

Kayak coaching in North WalesRunning wild rivers is all about judgment ,vision and balance. This week gives you the experience and skills you need to make those decisions. You'll concentrate on developing boat-positioning skills; refine your judgment and practical techniques to help you become a good white water paddler.

Previous Experience Competent Grade II paddler with some experience of Grade III. A reliable flat water roll.

White Water Coaching


Intermediate or advanced white water paddlers will find this two-day personal improvement programme a perfect way to hone their paddling skills . High staff to student ratios combined with top level coaching give maximum opportunity for improvement.

Previous Experience  competent grade II paddler with some experience of grade III and a reliable moving water roll.

Rolling Clinic

Stage 1
Using our local pool,  and river, our expert coaches will help you develop a strong, dependable roll in a variety of conditions.

Stage 2
Refining your roll and coaching a dependable roll in the white water/rapids of Symonds Yat.

Discover Canoeing


A two day introduction to the canoe. You?ll learn foundation canoe handling skills as part of a tandem crew or solo along with the principles required to paddle safely as part of a supervised group. On the second day you’ll refine your skills during a journey on the river Wye .And a gentle run down our local rapids.

Introduction to Canoeing


A five-day course introducing you to the basics of handling an open canoe. Develop your boat handling skills both solo and as part of a tandem crew. Consolidate your new-found skills whilst traveling the estuaries of North Wales and tackling the tranquil rivers and simple whitewater.

Canoe White Water Skills


Aimed at capable flat water paddlers solo or tandem, who want to develop their white water boat-handling skills. Under the guidance of our experienced coaches you’ll cover strategies for running white water and shooting white water rapids safely.

Introduction to Canoeing for Families

With the influence on family fun, this five-day course introduces you to the basics of handling an open canoe. You'll learn to handle a canoe both solo and as part of a tandem crew. You’ll enjoy the chance to consolidate your new-found skills as a family, paddling the tranquil river wye and simple whitewater.
Designed to prepare you to take to the water under your own steam in safety and confidence. During this week you'll learn about paddling technique, equipment selection, trip planning, safety and much, much more. But most of all, you'll do plenty of paddling together.

Intermediate Canoeing

This course aims to improve your all round ability as a canoeist. During the week you'll be coached to develop your paddling skills and then spend some time putting them into practice on some classic sections of Welsh rivers, estuaries and coastline. Solo skills and tandem skills will be covered. This combination of coaching and experience over the five days can raise the standard of your paddling dramatically.

Previous Experience Confident flat water paddler with the ability to maneuver your craft. (tandem or solo)

Solo Canoe skills Course


This course is designed purely for the solo paddler. During the week your coach will develop your solo paddling skills,. The boost in confidence and ability will help you enjoy your solo boating even more than you thought possible.

Previous Experience  have paddled in the stern of a tandem crew or have basic solo skills.

Wye 6 day expedition

This is a two part trip involving an introduction to canoe touring over a short 2 day journey followed by a 4 day expedition. The course will start at the centre to begin a local journey in order to learn or improve your camp craft skills on our private river side camp site, before traveling further a field for an extended journey, making the most of the prevailing water and weather conditions.

BCU Star awards and Courses.

 BCU 2 Star Award Training

canoe and kayak coaching in North WalesA combined canoe and kayak skills test that acts as an encouragement award and is the pre-requisite for the BCU level 1 and 2 certificates in coaching paddlesport.
Completion of the training course will lead to a personalised action plan in preparation for assessment.

Previous Experience  Competent flat water paddler in both canoe and kayak.(1 star skills, though the award itself is not a requirement).

Advanced White Water Safety and Rescue

A course designed for the trainee 5 star leader to cover safety and supervision of groups in advanced environments, training on steep bank security, recovery of boats, First aid considerations and advanced rope work enable the trainee leader to progress to assessment knowing they have the skills to supervise a group both on and off the water.

Dry suits/wetsuits are required.

Previous Experience   5 star skills and leadership training. BCU white-water Safety and rescue Course.

How do you gain a BCU Coaching qualification?

Stage 1:
Contact your appropriate governing body (BCU, WCA, CANI, SCA to obtain copies of the relevant syllabuses and registration form.

Stage 2:
Complete the registration form for the appropriate level of qualification, enclose photocopies of your prerequisites and return to the governing body. ( allow 14 days to process)

Stage 3:
Attend the training course, bring with you the registration form and the originals of your prerequisites. You must complete stages 1 and 2 before attending the course. Your registration form will be returned to the governing body, your training recorded on the database and your form returned to you having been approved for you to proceed to assessment.

Stage 4:
Attend the assessment course, bringing your registration form.

Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Paddlesport - BCU/UKCC (Boat Based)

Previous Experience  You will need to hold the new 2 star personal performance award or both old 2 star canoe and kayak tests. A valid first aid certificate is not required but is highly recommended.

PLEASE ENSURE you contact the British Canoe Union (0845 370 9500 www.bcu.org.uk) and complete any pre course administration and paperwork prior to attending the course, and bring all paperwork with you.

Level 2 Kayak Coach Assessment (Old Syllabus)

 

 

These assessment courses are for those who trained as coaches prior to 2007.

 No. Days 1 Cost £95 (non residential)

 Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Paddlesport Training BCU/UKCC (Boat Based) 

This is 4 day training course for the second level certificate in coaching paddle sport. The course is for people who may be working independently. This is a non- discipline specific course and students will learn the skills to teach in both canoe and kayak, a good standard of personal performance in both craft is required. For those candidates holding the pre-requisites and who have registered with the BCU .The course will cover all elements of the training syllabus including; safety and rescue skills for the coach, risk management, coaching skills planning programs for learners, supervisory skills, mentoring and supervision of assistants, CPD modules on Coaching Young people, child protection module.

Previous Experience  Coach Level 1 Training, New 2 star or old 2 star kayak and 2 star canoe, 3 star in either a single or double bladed discipline.

No. Days 4 Cost £395 

Level 2 BCU/UKCC Assessment

If successful, this one-day assessment leads to certification as a level 2 coach in paddlesports. Candidates must present a completed workbook at assessment and complete the practical components of the assessment.

Previous Experience  Hold a valid First Aid certificate, Hold 3 star in main discipline and demonstrate 3 star competency in an alternative.
Be 18 years of age or over, Completed level 2 training. Completed 20 hours of relevant coaching experience, Criminal Records Bureau check (contact BCU), child protection training, assessment tasks in assessment pack and professional Development Modules: of your choice
